Science Fiction

OK, this is really simple so I'm only going to say this once.

Science Fiction is fiction based on science. Period. Based on science as we understand it now. And based on science extrapolated into the future. Science Fantasy while a separate genre is allowed and maybe even required in small amounts.

This does not mean that the other elements of a good story are ignored. No, the characters, story and in my opinion especially the writing itself are so important.

This type of fiction is known as Hard Science Fiction. Or Hardcore Science Fiction. It is completely different from Horror or Fantasy. Although I like Fantasy of all types as well - if it is done properly. Unfortunately Fantasy is so often turned to as a way to fix bad writing of any type that it has an even worse reputation than Science Fiction.

And while the various Star Treks etc. make a token effort at Science Fiction they are really just mediocre fantasy. Others, like Star Wars are just plain bad.

Some episodes of the various Star Treks are OK, indeed the first season of Enterprise was quite good I thought.

Last, but definitely not least, Stephen King does not write Science Fiction! In fact he is probably the most over-rated writer in the world. Appealing as he does to the same crowd that likes reality TV shows.

So who is my favorite Hardcore Science Fiction author? Larry Niven.
