Welcome to my Editorials, proof that however quiet people think I am, in time they will wish I would just shut up!

Fantasy (Science II)

"Unfortunately Fantasy is so often turned to as a way to fix bad writing of any type that it has an even worse reputation than Science Fiction."

Eric Bailey

If you did not read the Editorial "Science" go back and read it first!

To repeat, I do like Fantasy - if it is done properly. Bad writers use Fantasy to try and fix the problems they create for themselves.

My favorite Hard Science Fiction writer is Larry Niven. He also writes Fantasy of various types. He has said that in writing Fantasy it is even more important to set rules for the world you are creating and stick to them than it is in other genres.

Fantasy (Science II) ~ Continued

EXAMPLE: Years ago I knew someone who liked "Murder She Wrote" a show I, well, loathed. They said to me one day - have you even watched it? Well not a whole episode I said. Then try it - you will be surprised. I was surprised alright. This episode was about a murder that happened approx. 40-45 years back at the end of the second world war. FYI The incriminating evidence was on an airplane that had crashed in the jungles of South America at the end of World War II. A lot of silly nothings happened during the bulk of the show and then in the last minute everything was wrapped up by a little speech by the lead character "Jessica Fletcher".

It went something like this and excuse me for paraphrasing: "....It took a crew of mechanics and engineers two weeks to repair the 40 year old crashed World War II airplane and cut a runway out of the jungle so it could be flown back to the states...."

Enough said.

My favourite Fantasy author? Well I like the Fantasy Larry Niven writes and Alan Dean Foster has some excellent ones in among his trashy books - but my favourite would have to be J.K. Rowling. I still hope to be Harry Potter's graphic designer when I grow up. Hey, all of those spells etc. don't just happen by magic.... er.... well, someone has to design all that stuff!
