Note the size and proportions of the ailerons. The idea behind the gull wing was that no fillets were thought to be required at the wing/fuselage junction. The rear stabiliser at least resembles the eventual Spitfire shape. Development of this pre-Spitfire Spitfire took place in the mid 1930's.
