This was the airplane that was selected for develpoment for the contract that was supposed to be the Spitfire. For a number of reasons - poorly chosen airfoil, an engine that was not the first choice because of low power etc. it never reached the potentional that was the reason for selecting it in the first place.
The further development of fhe design slowly but surely led to the elliptical wing plan etc. that resulted in the Spitfire everyone knows.
