Welcome to my Editorials, proof that however quiet people think I am, in time they will wish I would just shut up!

Paper Space

The following is from one of my first Newsletters....

"If you toggle TILEMODE and the only apparent difference is that the border sheet disappears then reappears, you are probably not using Paper Space properly."

Eric Bailey

For you young'ns out there you are probably wondering what could I possibly be talking about?!

Well, when Paper Space was first introduced it basically did not work properly.

Every PAN and/or ZOOM caused a REGEN. Even the higher end computers in the office could not run a plot with more than one or two VIEWPORTS without the computer freezing.

It has become the de facto standard in most offices, but it's just an excuse not to teach people about drawing scales. I have worked with people that could not figure out how to PLOT a drawing if it wasn't in Paper Space!

An Addendum is below the image-bar....

Addendum

While I still think the editorial above regarding PAPER SPACE is true. I don't think you can apply it in the work place anymore. This is due in part to improper training in the schools that glom onto every new feature in AutoCAD® whether it is of benefit or not combined with little or no CAD Management in the workplace.

FYI: The actual purpose of PAPER SPACE is to allow easy editing of the view shown - e.g. of a site plan etc.

So, you have to adapt. Which is one of the most important points to remember from my editorials and/or AutoCAD® tips. Just as the computer is a tool - the software is as well. You are the one that has to adapt....

Unfortunately what this means is that we have no choice, we have to use PAPER SPACE all of the time, at least in the work place. It's either that or confuse the heck out of all of the newly graduated "AutoCAD® Operators" - because lets face it they don't teach them to be Draftsman! At best they are "Operators"....
